To dream of death is a curse.

"I WAS BORN with the ability to prophesize the future. The destinies I dream about are impossible to alter, despite my many attempts to do so...nightly visions forewarn me of good fortune, but also of despair, discord, and death--always death."

Matilde of Ringelheim, a paragon of virtue and achievement, a legendary woman of passion, beloved 10th-century queen, and saint of the Germanic states, was one of the most influential and charitable women in European medieval history. Her story of love, family discord, betrayal, prophetic dreams, and political intrigue is an epic account of her history.

As the virtuous daughter of a noble family educated in an abbey, young Matilde faces a promising future, but she keeps a secret. Through her dreams, she can predict the future. When Duke Heinrich of Thuringia arrives unannounced at the abbey and wishes to marry Matilde, her childhood is over. At fourteen, she weds the young, enigmatic duke. She must leave everything behind and learn to navigate the intricacies and intrigues of her new life as a duchess, and later as queen.

Beset by great political intrigues, a ravaged people, fraught relationships, and yet inspired to a greater calling, Matilde sees what her future could hold if she could seize the moment—if her husband will believe in and act upon her prophetic dreams.

The Prophetic Queen A Biographical Novel of Germany First Queen edition by Mirella Sichirollo Patzer Literature Fiction eBooks

A well done biographical tale of a queen who lived in a time we know little about. Matilda of Ringelheim, Saint Matida, was born around 895 in the Duchy of Saxony and married Henry the Fowler about 910. Matilda was venerated because of her piety and her prophetic dreams.

Matilde and Heinrich were an improbable couple who shared a meaningful relationship in a time and place where that was more difficult. They ruled Germany together and Matilda assisted her husband with her insight.

I enjoyed the beginning immensely but it was long, and some of the dream sequences could have been shorter. Recommended to those who have great interest in medieval history

Fascinating read! Long but I couldn't stop...and it keep my curious mind engaged for some time!
I enjoyed this novel very much. It's well researched and written. Matilda was a remarkable woman. I liked how the author portrayed her as human, i.e., with flaws and errors in judgment. The novel was long, but I didn't find it burdensome. I felt it was tightly written and I didn't feel that portions could have been left out. If it had been one of those novels I "couldn't put down," it would have been a 5- star rating.
I am very impressed how multi-faceted and complete this book is
I enjoyed how every scene was painted so the reader could envision what was going on
This book needs a second edit, however, it is full of misprint which were overlooked prior to printing, especially the second half of the book. Also we Authors Notes for example.
But overall an excellent book that I look forward to rereading and recommend to any student of history.
I am a history buff. Lengthy or not - I loved the story!
What I didn't love were the blatant grammatical errors and spelling mistakes and inconsistencies. Was the editor asleep?
Prior to reading this novel, I had never heard of Matilde of Ringelheim, but I am so glad I came across the story of her life. Queen Matilde was a fascinating woman who had a great positive influence on the lives of those around her, both as a queen and as a mother. She was a progressive woman of the 10th century who left a legacy of love to the world . I strongly recommend this novel to anyone interested in this period of time and in learning of strong women of the past. Well done, Ms. Patzer!
Amazing Saga of one family's Legacy in medieval Germany. Unbelievable in its scope, depth and breath. I learned so much as I found it fun and intriguing to look up all of these characters and follow the actual historical accounts as I read this book. The author's ability to creatively infuse the circumstances of each character, which in many cases was not available or omitted in the historical account I read, made the reading of this novel very enjoyable. And on that note I have to say there were several places that brought me to tears as the emotion , especially from a mother's perspective was overwhelming. I highly recommend this book!
A life blessed or cursed by prophetic dreams, offering a bitter taste of the future is the burden and destiny of the medieval queen Matilde of Ringelheim. Powerless to alter the fate of those around her, Matilde strives for peace in a land torn apart by warfare and greed, where brothers by blood fight each other for the throne, the ultimate prize.

Matilde’s upbringing does not hint at forthcoming tumult. As a young girl, she knows only happiness within the abbey at Erfurt, part of the domain of Thuringia (Germany), where she serves dutifully among other novices at the behest of her grandmother, the abbess Maud. Sheltered within the cloister, Matilde is unprepared for the misery of an existence outside its walls, until her grandmother insists on a tour of the town. There Matilde encounters evidence of extreme poverty and pain, but also gains a profound awareness of her impending role and an affirmation of the haunting images in her dreams. Later, she meets the first man who will have an incredible influence on her life, Duke Heinrich of Thuringia. He offers her marriage, the possibility of children and opportunities to aid the less fortunate. Although taken aback by his boldness, Matilde is nonetheless intrigued by Heinrich and tempted by the promise of life as his duchess. In the company of her devoted friend, Sister Ricburg, the newly wedded Matilde tearfully leaves her grandmother and Erfurt behind to travel a new path with Heinrich.

Their union brings joy, especially as Matilde receives the warm welcome of her husband’s father, the Duke of Saxony, and bears children to ensure the continuation of the dynasty. But there are always opportunities for discord and misunderstanding. One source of personal malcontent is the firstborn son whom Heinrich had not revealed to Matilde before their marriage, the young Thankmar. Separated from his disgraced mother, Thankmar grows up in the shadow of Matilde’s son Otto, always aware that while he is the eldest, his younger brother will be Heinrich’s heir. The bonds of brotherhood cannot restrain Thankmar’s resentment and bitterness toward Otto, and sets off a dynastic feud that will affect the ducal family for generations to come. Mired in a situation rife with tension and the possibility of great grief, Matilde does her best as a mother to all of Heinrich’s children, soothing their hurts and troubles. Yet, the inherent enmity between Thankmar and Otto is beyond her control, as painful as the nightmares, which continue to plague her.

Dissension at home is not Matilde’s only trouble. Thuringia and the rest of Saxony face further turmoil. Magyar warlords and their violent raids have devastated the land and brutalized its people. Power-hungry rivals of Heinrich and his father seek to dominate Saxony and embroil its warriors in endless warfare. Through incessant struggles and intrigue, each man gains a chance to obtain his greatest desire, but for Heinrich, even the throne may not be enough. Despite his enduring happiness with Matilde and their growing brood, he also maintains a determined obsession to obtain the Holy Lance, an ancient relic associated with the misery and downfall of all who have claimed it in the past. Can Matilde fulfill her dreams of a united Saxony where Magyar threats no longer exist, the achievement of peace between her sons and the improvement of daily life for all Saxons? Can she also ensure that Heinrich’s pursuit of the Holy Lance does not destroy her family?

It takes great personal courage to embrace her destiny, but Matilde does not shrink from the task. She is a compelling heroine, both for her dual commitments to God and her family, but also the knowledge contained in her prophetic dreams. As a mother and wife, she is dutiful and circumspect. As a duchess, she embodies strength, compassion, and selflessness. She is always unafraid, whether in offering her contradictory opinions to her husband, or granting comfort to the poor. It is no wonder the real Matilde was lauded in her time. She remains a remarkable heroine and historical figure.

It was an honor to be among the first readers of this new novel and it’s with great personal pleasure that I enthusiastically recommend it to previous readers of Mirella Patzer’s novels, those who enjoy an authentic representation of the Middle Ages, and readers of historical biographies. The author has created a masterful portrayal of tenth-century life in Germany and possesses an intimate knowledge of her characters, their foibles and fates.
